Example of

Starting Your 1st Web Site

Your homepage is usually the first contact the visitor makes with you.  It must be impressive, yet to the point.

Remember -
visitors decide in the first 4 to 10 seconds

whether or not to continue any further.

Keep in mind: Your visitors will come to your site for a single purpose.  They come for answers or solutions, to buy or shop for  products, and for general reference or research.

The following ideas/suggestions will contribute to your homepage (index.html) being effective:
  • Use a 1-sentence tagline that illustrates the whole purpose of the page and/or website.  A good example of this would be here above - "Guidelines...a first impression."
  • Group all company information into one unobtrusive section.  Better yet, set up a link to an "About Us" page.
  • Emphasize the top 5 tasks of your website.  Narrow down your focus to 5 topics you cover thoroughly, even if there are many more than that.
  • If your site has 10 or more pages, it would benefit you to provide a site map.
  • On your homepage, provide examples of content within.
  • Use descriptive, relative link words to make it easier for your visitor to know what that link is for.
  • Point out recent features and provide a means to retrieve previous features.
  • You want your navigation to be accurate and effective.  You do not want the menu to be overpowering nor do you want it to be inaccessible.
  • A lot of "surfers" disable their graphics while browsing; and a vast majority of PC users dismiss graphics completely as advertising.  Even though the clip art may be right in front of them, the visitor may totally ignore them.
  • Use meaningful graphics.  Your graphics should be placed for emphasis not content.  (NOTE-photos of real subjects are better than cartoons or animated images.)
